SANDY, Utah -- A feral second-half attack led to an improbable comeback for the Vanco
SANDY, Utah -- A feral second-half attack led to an improbable comeback for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Whitecaps scored two goals in the final eight minutes to steal a 2-2 tie at Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Nicolas Mezquidas first career goal in the 86th minute cut the deficit in half and set the stage for fellow Uruguaian Sebastian Fernandez, who scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to stun the home crowd and earn the result. Real Salt Lake (3-0-5), the leagues remaining unbeaten team, jumped ahead 2-0 in the games first nine minutes on goals by Joao Plata and Alvaro Saborio. But the Whitecaps (2-2-4) again showed some second-half magic. "Its a get out of jail card, I believe," Vancouver coach Carl Robinson said. "We were 2-0 down and dug ourselves a hole, but we learned from that. Weve shown if we go behind, the games not over." Fernandezs shot from about 40 yards out beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the lower right corner of the net. It was a dramatic capper to an unlikely turn of events that began moments earlier when Saborio held possession. The Salt Lake forward dribbled in space near midfield, in what appeared to be the start to an offensive rush that would, if nothing else, run out the games final seconds. But Vancouver defender Steven Beitashour tackled the ball away and to the foot of Fernandez, who scored his second goal of the season. "I got the ball and knew it was going to be one of the last plays of the game," Fernandez said through an interpreter. "I got it, hit it, and it went in." Said Beitashour: "I was on the floor when I saw Seba take it, and hes got a rocket. I think everyone behind him was yelling Shoot! Shoot! I had a good angle from the floor, and that ball moved on (Rimando)." Vancouver, which earned a point for the first time in four games, was stunned by the early deficit and "played fearful" in the first half, according to Robinson. After the break, the Whitecaps sent wave after wave at Rimando, and looked to be a different squad. Robinson went to his bench to provide a spark, sending Fernandez and Mezquida each in shortly after halftime. Vancouvers challenge now comes in finding consistency throughout a full 90 minutes -- a task Robinson acknowledged after the game. "Its a challenge when youve got a group of young players, which is what I have," Robinson said. "They played with fear in the first half. I dont want them to play with fear. I put demands on players because I know how good they can be, but theyve got to start believing. Were touching the surface at the moment." John Kelly Jersey . Rookie Christian Vazquez got his first three major league hits and drove in three runs, while David Ortiz had three RBIs to break open the game in the sixth inning and lead Boston over the Houston Astros 8-3. Stroman, making his fifth start for Toronto, allowed one earned run and three hits over a career-high eight innings. Mark Van Guilder, Austin Watson and Colton Sissons also scored for the Admirals (22-13-10), who are 2-0-2 in their last four outings, while Roussel tacked on an assist for a two-point night. Greg Pateryn scored once for the Bulldogs (20-22-4), who lost their fifth straight contest, and also assisted on Gabriel Dumonts goal. The Canucks figured to be active prior to Wednesdays trade deadline, getting a jump on things the previous day when they dealt goaltender Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers for netminder Jacob Markstrom and forward Shawn Matthias. The Toronto Raptors offence appears to be back on track after a miserable stretch. DeMar DeRozan and Toronto can match a season high with a sixth straight victory Saturday night when they visit the Washington Wizards, who hope to be refreshed following a flurry of games in spite of the precedent theyve set. The Raptors (32-15) averaged 90.0 points on 39.2 percent shooting during a 1-3 stretch from Jan. 16-21. Theyve since averaged 111.0 points on 48.8 percent shooting during a five-game winning streak. They also won six straight from Nov. 15-26 and Dec. 12-21. Both streaks included four home victories, while three during this run have come on the road, including Fridays 127-122 overtime victory against Brooklyn. DeRozan, who shot 35.7 percent when Toronto lost three of four, has scored 24-plus in three of four and had 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting against the Nets. He has 59 points in his last two games versus Washington. DeRozan also had nine assists, matching his second-highest total ever. Toronto owns a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio during its winning streak after recording a 1.1 ratio when it lost three of four. I know I draw a lot of attention, especially when I get in the paint, said DeRozan, who averages 2.9 assists. ... Its just me paying attention to how teams are going to defend me, defend us, where guys are going to be open. Amir Johnson had 24 points - 14.1 above his season average - while reserve Lou Williams scored 25 two nights after recording 27 against Sacramento. Both performances helped buoy the Raptors in spite of Kyle Lowrys 10 points on 4-of-17 shooting. He has shot 35.3 perrcent over his last seven games and is 11 for 31 in his last two versus Washington, though he has 10-plus assists in four straight meetings.dddddddddddd Amir and DeMar held it down tonight, Lowry said. They made all the winning plays. DeRozan had 25 points in a 103-84 home win over Washington on Nov. 7, Torontos fifth victory in six meetings. The Wizards shot 36.1 percent with John Wall, Paul Pierce and Nene going a combined 8 for 35. Washington (31-16) is likely relieved to have two days of rest since Wednesdays 106-98 loss at Phoenix, its fourth game in five days. Each of those opponents rank 11th or higher in terms of pace, with the Suns at No. 2. The Wizards and Raptors prefer a slower style, ranking 20th and 18th, respectively. Wall and Bradley Beal were a combined 10 of 31 versus Phoenix while Nene is questionable after sitting out with a sore right foot. The Wizards are 4-4 when he doesnt play. It was our fourth game in five nights and we were playing teams that were pretty fast, said Wall, who had been 26 of 45 over his last three games before going 5 for 16. Denver and L.A. and now them, so it was tough. Im not looking for excuses but we definitely didnt have the same energy as we usually do. Washington is 5-5 with two or more days rest, however, and Wall is shooting 41.8 percent in those contests compared to 47.4 in all others. Wall has been wildly inconsistent in his last six matchups with Toronto. He shot 60.0 percent or better with 31-plus points twice, while three other times he shot 29.4 percent or worse. Beal is shooting 30.2 percent in his last four meetings.
